SMI, through its fully-owned subsidiary SMI Auto Pte Ltd, has entered into a master franchise agreement with Europcar, a leading European car rental company, to provide car rental and limousine services in Myanmar. As of June 2016, Europcar is the first and only international car rental brand to operate in Myanmar.
Following the liberalization of Myanmar’s economy, there has been strong growth in the economy and a significant rise in tourism flows and FDI investment, resulting in strong demand for car hire and rental services.
Combining Europcar’s global network and international car rental management experience with SMI Auto’s growing Myanmar
operational expertise and support services, this business franchise has scaled up quickly. Starting with a modest fleet
size of just 17 cars in July 2015, strong demand has seen the fleet size grow four times within eight months of operation.
As of June 2016, half of the fleet were on long-term, corporate rental contracts with international companies. In addition to these long term deals, there are Europcar booths at the international airports of both Naypyidaw and Yangon, offering transfer service between the Airport and downtown Yangon. Europcar booths can also be found at the following locations: Hledan Center (Yangon), Savoy Hotel (Yangon), Novotel (Yangon) and Chanmyathazi Township (Mandalay).
